Dr Danila Bracaglia Historian & Certified Tour Guide
Anzio was one of the most dramatic and complex battles of the Italian Campaign. For many Allied families, it marks the place where a father, grandfather, or loved one first landed in Europe — and where months of intense fighting shaped the long road to Rome.
Important to know: the Battle of Anzio was not confined to the landing beaches. Unlike D-Day in Normandy, the fighting extended far inland, across a wide battlefield of more than 20 kilometers, following the Allied advance toward Aprilia, Cisterna, and the Alban Hills.
Many standard tours remain close to the beaches. This tour instead focuses on the actual inland battlefields — where the fighting took place — exploring the terrain, positions, and routes of advance that shaped the campaign.
This experience is designed both for families of WWII veterans and for World War II history enthusiasts who wish to understand Anzio beyond a brief coastal visit.
I am Dr. Danila Bracaglia, a professional licensed guide and historian specializing in the Italian Campaign of World War II.
Each Anzio tour is fully personalized. Some guests come to retrace the footsteps of a father or grandfather who fought here; others are deeply interested in the strategy, terrain, and operational decisions that shaped the battle.
According to your interests, the tour can focus on specific units, sectors, dates, or key engagements, using original maps, war diaries, aerial photographs, and archival sources to interpret the battlefield on site.
This is not a transportation-based sightseeing tour. The focus is on understanding where and how the fighting actually took place.
All tours are private, customized experiences. Pricing reflects the level of historical research, preparation, and professional interpretation provided throughout the tour.
To keep the experience focused on history rather than logistics, I usually recommend that guests travel to Anzio independently by train from Rome. The journey is simple, comfortable, and far more economical than private transfers.
Meeting directly in Anzio allows the day to be fully dedicated to the battlefield experience — walking the ground, understanding events, and engaging with the landscape — rather than spending valuable hours in traffic.
For guests who prefer door-to-door service, private pick-up from Rome can be arranged on request. I am always happy to provide information and assistance for this option, depending on availability and individual needs.
The value of this tour lies in historical expertise and personalized research, not in transportation.
While Anzio is often the starting point, many guests — families and history enthusiasts alike — choose to extend their journey to follow the broader path of the Allied advance in Italy.
