Piana delle Orme War Museum

The Museum is situated near the city of Latina, to be exact, right between Borgo Faiti and Borgo St. Michele, about 40 minutes from Anzio and it is always part of my tour.  The museum park has a surface of approximately 25.000 square meters and it  has been divided into a large number of pavilions, each with its own theme. Those subjects do not only cover World War II but are also concerned with toys (such as military modeling), old agricultural machines and tools (amongst which 300 different tractors), the draining of the Pontine marches (drained in the 1930s under the reign of Benito Mussolini) and the daily life in those days. But it needs to be stated that whatever has been exposed regarding the Second World War is of outstanding quality. In the various pavilions dioramas depict how Italy became involved in the war, the course of the North African campaigns, the amphibian landing of the allied troops near Anzio, the battle for Monte Cassino. Many vehicles are mostly of WW2 vehicles left behind by the Allies in WW2.  It contains some unique vehicles, for example just to mention one the  Duplex Drive Sherman:  a rare amphibious Sherman tank from World War II is on display at the museum. The tank was lost off the Salerno coast and recovered in 1998. The tank actually floated and was moved by two propellers on its rear underside. The black skeleton surrounding the tank would be covered by a rubber shield and the tank would float ashore, drop the skeleton and shield, then drive off.
