WWII Anzio Beachhead Tour – Operation Shingle & Beyond
The Battle of Anzio, part of the Allied campaign to liberate Italy, began on January 22, 1944, under the codename Operation Shingle. The amphibious landings at Anzio were intended to bypass the German Gustav Line and force a breakthrough to Rome. What followed was a four-month battle characterized by fierce resistance, stalemates, and trench warfare.
Many associate the Battle of Anzio only with the beaches, but the real battlefield extended inland through towns, hills, and farmland. This comprehensive tour offers a full understanding of the campaign by tracing both the coastal and inland fighting routes, including the stories of Medal of Honor recipients Sylvester Antolak and Audie Murphy.
Our journey begins at the solemn Sicily–Rome American Cemetery near Nettuno, where 7,861 American soldiers are buried. The cemetery honors those who died from the landings in Sicily (July 1943) through the liberation of Rome (June 1944).
