Audie Murphy's WWII Tour

Audie Murphy's WWII Tour

In early 1944, the Anzio beachhead became one of the most grueling arenas of the Italian Campaign. Amid the mud, artillery barrages, and unrelenting German counterattacks, a young private from Texas named Audie Murphy began to forge his legacy with the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division. He was just 18 years old, underweight, and underestimated but in the crucible of Anzio, he became a soldier.

Murphy landed with the 15th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Company B, and quickly distinguished himself under fire. On January 30, 1944, during the battle for Cisterna di Latina, Murphy risked his life to deliver critical communications under intense enemy fire. For this act of bravery, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal — his first U.S. decoration.

That same month, hundreds of Rangers were surrounded and killed or captured near Cisterna, while the 3rd ID held its ground with grit and sacrifice.

“We had no choice but to keep moving. You either fought or you died.” — Audie Murphy

This tour retraces the road taken by Murphy and his comrades in the 3rd Infantry Division during their bitter struggle to hold and expand the Anzio beachhead — from the landing beaches to the hills above Valmontone. Through preserved sites, memorials, and exclusive wartime photos, we bring to life the personal and collective story of the men who held the line.

“I sat there and stared at the bodies of men who had once laughed and cursed and talked with me... They were gone.” – Audie Murphy, To Hell and Back
